Geez Mr. Lyon...

1. What was the climax of the story? Some of you have already talked about this in class, but I want each group to come to a consensus.
2. What was the social commentary?
3. Why did you like/dislike the novel?

I personally feel that the climax of this story was when BERNARD revealed that the Director had a child, not just from a test tube but he really produced John with a woman. WOW. For all you guys who don't know why its such a big deal, it is a BIG deal because in this story, these people are not produced naturally but from inside a lab. I think this is the climax por que this is when everything started going downhill. After the director was totally embarrassed and went on holiday, everything went BAD. That's when it all started. John & Linda came into the "New World" and that's when things just went BAD. Another climax which I can see why it is, has to be the ending of the book, when John goes nuts and starts whipping people and at the end kills himself. I can see why that is the climax because damnnnn we did not see that coming! John was very unhappy and had went through so much in the short period of time being in this new world. For him to go nuts and just kill himself was like "are you serious!" So it really depends on how you see it. I personally feel that these two big parts of the book led to many consequences and it was at its extreme high point in the story.

The social commentary, gosh Mr. Lyon, you really want to know? I already said it. Lol. Like a billion times. And everytime I talk about this, I always feel as if I am wrong. Okay, I feel that the social commentary again can be more than just one. The author can be tricking the readers, some commentary can be obvious but I feel there is more than one message. Huxley I feel is trying to point out to the readers, there is NO such things as a perfect world. We all try to make the world a better place and its hard. The story reveals the flaws of a perfect society, making it not so perfect after all. Ya dig? Ha. The society sounds like the best place, no pain, no stress, just soma and everyone belongs to everyone, no such thing as love (Butttttt love is a good feeling right?). Oh how we do wish the real world was like that but it really isn't. Another thing--the Government. This goes back to that subject. What is the government hiding? Are they really protecting us? I also think this book sends a message telling us that a government should work for the people. Not the other way around. In this story, the people were obviously working for the government. The government was like hiding the truth and putting the alphas, betas, etc under a spell. All Propaganda. Geezzz! This Huxley is a tripppp!

Mr. Lyon, you said social commentary can also be a theme right? A message from the author? If so, this is a little extra. This book has definitely send out a message to me. Even though I am not very happy with Bernard, I still felt the message is still there. Be yourself even when society is trying to put you down. Bernard was only trying to find out who he was and even though in the long run, he turned out to be a jerk, he did stand out to me, it hit me, Be yourself. Everyone is different and being an individual is the best! A little side note? Haha.

The Book Overall
Okay, I have to admit, I was not looking forward to reading this book & when I was reading the first couple of pages, I was like WTF have I got myself into? But as I continued reading on, I really enjoyed it. This Huxley guy is a crazy trickster. I felt so bad for this character Bernard and now I just don't like him. I did get confused at some parts of the story but I really liked it. I liked how he added a lot of different things, different messages, even if its not the same for others, I feel that there were more than one theme. I also liked how he added SOMA. Haha. (C'mon, you knew I was going to say that!) He is really creative with this story and I'm glad I was able to read his writing. I've learned a lot from this literature circle group reading thingy, for example how to really look deeeper than just in the shallow water but really dive in and how there is no such thing as a WRONG answer! (Even though I always feel that I am wrong). I'm sure that's how its suppose to turn out huh? Haha. I'm sure the other books the other groups are reading are good too & I wanted to read the other books now after reading their blogs.

I must say, these blog assignments are actually fun. Sometimes. Ha.

i'm glad we got down what the climax was and how everythihng went downhill after that. and though there's complete control of the society, i'd think i'd rather live in that world, where we needn't worry and stress. and i told you that the book was good.

As usual: Well put! The concept of the "perfect society" is somewhat ridiculous. Jeffrey said it well: "no perfect world is accepted by everyone". In other words, perfection is subjective.

Live life on a soma holiday? I'd MUCH rather experience the extremes that life delivers... but hey, that's just me.
