Geez Mr. Lyon...

1. What was the climax of the story? Some of you have already talked about this in class, but I want each group to come to a consensus.
2. What was the social commentary?
3. Why did you like/dislike the novel?

I personally feel that the climax of this story was when BERNARD revealed that the Director had a child, not just from a test tube but he really produced John with a woman. WOW. For all you guys who don't know why its such a big deal, it is a BIG deal because in this story, these people are not produced naturally but from inside a lab. I think this is the climax por que this is when everything started going downhill. After the director was totally embarrassed and went on holiday, everything went BAD. That's when it all started. John & Linda came into the "New World" and that's when things just went BAD. Another climax which I can see why it is, has to be the ending of the book, when John goes nuts and starts whipping people and at the end kills himself. I can see why that is the climax because damnnnn we did not see that coming! John was very unhappy and had went through so much in the short period of time being in this new world. For him to go nuts and just kill himself was like "are you serious!" So it really depends on how you see it. I personally feel that these two big parts of the book led to many consequences and it was at its extreme high point in the story.

The social commentary, gosh Mr. Lyon, you really want to know? I already said it. Lol. Like a billion times. And everytime I talk about this, I always feel as if I am wrong. Okay, I feel that the social commentary again can be more than just one. The author can be tricking the readers, some commentary can be obvious but I feel there is more than one message. Huxley I feel is trying to point out to the readers, there is NO such things as a perfect world. We all try to make the world a better place and its hard. The story reveals the flaws of a perfect society, making it not so perfect after all. Ya dig? Ha. The society sounds like the best place, no pain, no stress, just soma and everyone belongs to everyone, no such thing as love (Butttttt love is a good feeling right?). Oh how we do wish the real world was like that but it really isn't. Another thing--the Government. This goes back to that subject. What is the government hiding? Are they really protecting us? I also think this book sends a message telling us that a government should work for the people. Not the other way around. In this story, the people were obviously working for the government. The government was like hiding the truth and putting the alphas, betas, etc under a spell. All Propaganda. Geezzz! This Huxley is a tripppp!

Mr. Lyon, you said social commentary can also be a theme right? A message from the author? If so, this is a little extra. This book has definitely send out a message to me. Even though I am not very happy with Bernard, I still felt the message is still there. Be yourself even when society is trying to put you down. Bernard was only trying to find out who he was and even though in the long run, he turned out to be a jerk, he did stand out to me, it hit me, Be yourself. Everyone is different and being an individual is the best! A little side note? Haha.

The Book Overall
Okay, I have to admit, I was not looking forward to reading this book & when I was reading the first couple of pages, I was like WTF have I got myself into? But as I continued reading on, I really enjoyed it. This Huxley guy is a crazy trickster. I felt so bad for this character Bernard and now I just don't like him. I did get confused at some parts of the story but I really liked it. I liked how he added a lot of different things, different messages, even if its not the same for others, I feel that there were more than one theme. I also liked how he added SOMA. Haha. (C'mon, you knew I was going to say that!) He is really creative with this story and I'm glad I was able to read his writing. I've learned a lot from this literature circle group reading thingy, for example how to really look deeeper than just in the shallow water but really dive in and how there is no such thing as a WRONG answer! (Even though I always feel that I am wrong). I'm sure that's how its suppose to turn out huh? Haha. I'm sure the other books the other groups are reading are good too & I wanted to read the other books now after reading their blogs.

I must say, these blog assignments are actually fun. Sometimes. Ha.

Just a little fun!

Music : Kanye West - Gold Digger

Oh, to my group, if you want to comment by Wednesday, my blog entry number 2 is the one under this one.

I just want to say, I really don't like BERNARD sometimes. When first introduced, I felt bad that he had to hide his true self because he is different. He wants to be accepted but as I read on, he wants to be accepted for a wrong reason. All the people now admire him because he bought a savage to their society. BERNARD needs to chillax.

Appealing And Some Satire.

Music : Brian McKnight - Everything [[Good Song]]

Small Talk

Alright you guys all finished posting so its my turn. Oh yeah and whoever went to PROM, it was kickass until Wilson asked me if I did my English homework. That was not good. But in conclusion, PROM was freaking AMAZING & I hope everyone who went had fun. & Mr. Lyon, you should have went. Haha. & how come I always feel as if my entries does not answer the questions? :/

QUESTONS: Why do you think the author put some appealing characteristics into his hypothetical world?
In what ways does Brave New World match (or stray from) the satire model we discussed in class?
(All members comment on the same questions)

I believe the author put some appealing characteristics into his hypothetical world because he is definely trying to prove a point. I feel he is trying to say, "hey, you want peace? Then you have to do this for me." kind of thing. Also, I agree with Wilson saying how Huxley is trying to make us see how life CAN be wonderful, how it CAN be "happy" Huxley also created a world that everyone somewhat wants, an ideal society, where SEX is good and you can "do it" with everyone you want & how there are no disease, you're just happy 24/7 but as you read on in the book, Huxley does point out that even the ideal world has a price. Like with soma (MY FAVORITE SUBJECT EVER!!), to get your happiness, you must take this drug. (WTF is that (sorry for the slang/AIM language Mr. Lyon)).

Santire, kay, One I really liked how Mr. Bernard Marx is named after Karl Marx, a communist. Maybe its just me but Bernard is this guy who is trying to break out of the society and he feels isloated and different and believes there is more than just soma and free sex and "ford" and then where he has this last name that reflects on a man like Karl Marx. I'm not trying to say Karl Marx is a bad guy but I'm just saying, Bernard and Karl seems to me TOTAL opposites and maybe Huxley was trying to "make fun" of this. Two, sex, this one is not that big of a deal because today in our society it seems to be okay to have sex with different individuals but when Huxley wrote this book, I believe it was a little bit more scandalous. I feel that Huxley is suggesting sex is nothing, in his book, You can have anyone you want and do anything you want with that person and still not have a baby. Just to point out one more, the best, SOMA. Huxley I feel put this drug called soma in the book because DAMN its a drug, supposely its bad for you, but the author makes it sound as if soma is what we need in our society, YAY for soma, it makes you happy. Soma=Happiness ; Soma = Drug, so DRUG=Happiness? I don't know! Okay, I think that's enough.

A side note on the SEX, I personally feel that it does relate to how our world is today, like you don't have to be married to have sex but it makes me like mad that in this book, the ladies are allowed to have sex with whoever they want and not be judged by it but in reality, if you sleep around, you're considered a hoe/slut/bytch or whatever. That is just something I want to point out that made me a little upset. I'm not saying this for myself and that I want to sleep around but I feel that women should have equal playing grounds as men. That is all. :]

Conflict

WARNING, BAD GRAMMAR

THERE ARE WAY TOO MUCH CONFLICT in this book but its interesting, so I'm not complaining. (:

Alright, Brave New World, I haven't read a lot of the book yet but there really is a conflict going on, probably even more than one. Right now, I personally feel its a little of both Man vs. Man and Man vs. Nature. For one thing, Man vs. Man, people are fighting people, not physically but where they are trying to keep control of each other (the director keeping the citizens out of knowing the truth, the real reason of life, kind of protecting them from pain and making them "perfect"). Putting it in easier terms, the man is trying to keep them down. Also it is Man vs. Nature because the characters in the book, mainly the director or leader of these people, are "toying" with nature. They are creating babies from embryos, making twins (I'm really not sure what they are making right now) or something. The leader(s) of this "world" or town are brianwashing their people. The people are not born through another human being but in a lab. The leader(s) are playing with nature and trying to find a new way of doing things, the unnaturally way, so it seems. But yes, really it is a lot more Man vs. Man because of the fact that the man (government) is trying to control the people. There are way too many secrets.

Someone HELP me understand this more. I'm really not sure if this is right?
Alright, so social commentary. (I'm not sure if I hit the spot with this one). I personally feel that this story has a lot to do with government. These controllers in the story is the government, all ruling. No one knows the truth, the controllers are keeping the secrets away from the citizens. In a way, I feel the author is trying to tell us that yes, its okay to have someone to represent us but only to a point where they are representing the people and not make the people think the way the government wants us. The citizens should think for themselves and be able to express themselves.

Little Notes
First, I believe that the author is trying to give his outlook on the future. He wrote this book in 1932, I believe and during that time, not a lot of technology was created and no one really researched it. And Huxley is telling us through this story how he sees the future. Also I feel the author is trying to make us realize that all societies are not perfect, even when it seems like it is. In this story, this society is "perfect" but really is it? What is perfect? Where do we draw the line of mortals, unethical and unnatural? I'm not sure but I feel there will be secrets revealing later and it will get a little "crazy." hmmmm.... we'll see.
